Why The San Antonio Spurs Do The Deal
For some, this will seem like a step backward for the Spurs. They just traded Dejounte Murray in exchange for three first-round picks – why trade a first-round pick and a swap for Poole?
Well, we’ve got a couple of justifications. Firstly, the Spurs could have been apprehensive about Murray as a long-term building block for a couple of reasons. On the court, he’s a poor shooter. We’ve seen in recent years that lead ball-handlers who don’t space the floor well can be difficult to build around.
We won’t delve too deeply into potential issues with Murray off the court. We’ll simply say that he’s demonstrated some odd behavior this summer that the Spurs may not have been comfortable with.
Either way, they could see Poole as a better fit. Moreover, the Spurs are gambling on themselves here.
