Why The Golden State Warriors Do The Deal 

Of course, you know why the Warriors are doing this deal. They’re doing it to avoid paying Poole. 

In all likelihood, he’s got a big payday coming after 2022-23. Meanwhile, Vassell has a year on his deal. For the Warriors, this trade is partly about kicking the can on making financial decisions. 

With that said, it’s also about acquiring Devin Vassell. He’s quite good. While he’s not nearly as dynamic an offensive player as Poole, he’s a better defender. Still, he’s probably not the main draw for the Warriors here. 

That would be the Spurs’ 2025 first-round pick. In fact, handing it to the Warriors wouldn’t be easy for the Spurs – there’s every possibility that their rebuild is still in the early stages by then, and they’re giving up a future lottery pick here.
