Why The Los Angeles Lakers Do The Deal
We’ll be frank: Kemba Walker is probably not the solution to every problem in Los Angeles. At this point, it’s unlikely that he’ll ever return to his previous All-Star form. That doesn’t mean he’s not a good target.
Realistically, the Lakers may not need much in terms of outside acquisitions. The Lakers need Anthony Davis to resume his status as a top-10 player, and for LeBron James to not decline. If those two things happen, any roster upgrade is a good one.
Walker qualifies. He may not be a star anymore, but he’s a point guard who can hit threes. On the strength of that fact alone, he’d improve the Lakers’ functionality in 2022-23.
Most importantly, they don’t have to part with draft picks to land him. Perhaps they still deal Westbrook, along with those picks, elsewhere – landing Walker at the expense of four players they probably won’t play remains a good decision.
