Why The Minnesota Timberwolves Do The Deal
If any team can afford to start a smaller point guard, it’s the Timberwolves. After all, their frontcourt is about to be enormous.
On the other hand, one could argue otherwise. After all, did the Jazz not just show us that Rudy Gobert, as elite as he is, can’t guarantee an elite defense without help on the perimeter? For that matter, wasn’t Mike Conley running point for them when they did?
Yes. Still, the Jazz never had as dynamic of an offensive pairing as Towns and Anthony Edwards. Granted, the offense was never the issue in Utah, but having two-star offensive players may make the Timberwolves more playoff-proof.
Moreover, it will be interesting to see how Towns fares on defense when slotted down to the 4 spot – he may thrive as a weakside shot blocker.

Of course, we’ve just pointed to another advantage of this deal for the Wolves. They’re reuniting Conley and Gobert. Their preexisting chemistry should be valuable to this group.
Still, Conley’s vastly superior floor spacing in comparison to Russell is the main appeal here. He’ll complement the aforementioned star pairing better than Russell was able to.
Are the Jazz getting enough back for two high-quality, floor-spacing veterans?
