Why The Minnesota Timberwolves Do The Deal
Yes. This is a matter of convenience for the Wolves. It feels like Reid’s time with this organization is running out. He may be a combo big, but he’s most impactful at the 5 spot. Unfortunately, the Wolves have the best combination of 5s in the NBA between Karl-Anthony Towns and Rudy Gobert.
In all likelihood, they’ll look to stagger them next season. That doesn’t leave much room for Reid to progress, and he’s a restricted free agent after 2022-23.
It feels likely that some team will offer him more than the Wolves can justify paying a backup at a position they’re stacked at.
On the other hand, they could use another point guard. D’Angelo Russell may be more talented than Monte Morris, but he’s not as good of a fit alongside Towns and Anthony Edwards. The Wolves could use a lower-usage floor general who provides more off-ball value. That’s Morris to a tee.

The Wolves, obviously, make the least notable transaction here. It should still benefit them- even if they’re not receiving a former lottery pick.
