Why The Chicago Bulls Do The Deal 

This wouldn’t be an easy decision for the Bulls to make. Realistically, they’d be cutting ties with their championship ambitions in 2022-23. At the same time, how realistic were those ambitions in the first place? 

Frankly, not very realistic at all. Last season, the Bulls won 46 games and found themselves eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. Furthermore, as we already highlighted, the Bulls are low on the assets they’d need to improve their roster. 

Don’t misconstrue this as us advocating for a complete rebuild for the Bulls. They’re probably too talented to do that. This is about retooling. With this deal, the Bulls extend their plan from a short-term model to a slightly longer-term one. 

That’s because the Bulls are acquiring the assets they’d need to make a deal. Realistically, they could assemble a package that could net them the next available disgruntled superstar after this deal. With their newfound draft capital, they’ll increase their optionality.

On the other hand, the Knicks would minimize theirs. Is DeRozan worth that cost?
