Why The Golden State Warriors Do The Deal
In a vacuum, no. This is not an ideal trade for the Warriors.
On the other hand, for a team that just won an NBA title, the Warriors aren’t in an ideal situation. Wiggins is a free agent after this season, and Jordan Poole will be due for a pay raise as well. With Draymond Green angling for a max contract, the Warriors are about to get prohibitively expensive.
This deal lightens that load. Granted, it adds a sizeable contract in Fournier, but his salary pales in comparison to any Wiggins is likely to receive. Moreover, it makes significant contributions to the Warriors’ sneakily strong young core.
Adding Toppin, Reddish and a first-round pick to a group already consisting of Jonathan Kuminga, James Wiseman, Moses Moody, and Jordan Poole gives the Warriors a young core that rebuilding teams will be jealous of.

This team’s recent dynastic run may soon be coming to a close, but the ability to instantly pivot into a quality rebuild is one the Warriors shouldn’t take for granted.
After all, giving it to themselves is better than losing something for nothing.
