Why The Chicago Bulls Do The Deal
This is a trade that would leave Bulls fans depressed. We understand – nobody likes to fold with a decent hand. At the same time, it can be the right decision.
Again: the Bulls do not project as a championship team in 2022-23. That is the cold, hard reality of their situation. Meanwhile, at 33, DeMar DeRozan does not project as a candidate to facilitate internal improvement.
Furthermore, the Bulls are actually in a good position to retool. Zach LaVine is only 27, and plenty of the pieces around him on this team are young. Lonzo Ball is 24, and Patrick Williams is just 21. There is a framework here for the Bulls to make this deal, improve on their draft capital, and land LaVine a new co-star within the next year or two.
This won’t be an easy decision for the Bulls to make, but the sky won’t fall either. In all likelihood, they’ll remain competitive in DeRozan’s absence – we’re not advocating for a tank job here.
