Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal
Before we make the following statement, we’d like to clarify something: Zach LaVine is absurdly talented. He’s one of the most dynamic scorers in the National Basketball Association. Having said, that, we’ll say this: Zach LaVine is no Luka Doncic.
With that in mind, adding DeRozan would put the Mavericks squarely in contention for the NBA championship.
No, the fit isn’t perfect. It would be preferable if DeRozan was a more credible floor-spacer. Still, the combined playmaking talent between him and Doncic would be nearly impossible to contain.
We suspect they could make it work. Firstly, the Mavericks would likely look to stagger their two stars as frequently as possible. They’d have at least one star-level playmaker on the floor for most of every game.

When they did share the floor, DeRozan would simply have to shoot threes. It’s entirely possible that, with the attention defenses give Doncic, he’d have the space to connect at a career-best mark.
If not, DeRozan’s passing vision will still enable him to create good shots for the team after attacking closeouts. All told, the two could be a dominant pairing – if this deal is on the table, it’s time for the Mavericks to push their chips in.
