Washington Wizards Receive: F/C John Collins
Atlanta Hawks Receive: G/F Will Barton, F Rui Hachimura, 2028 Top-16 Protected First-Round Pick

The Washington Wizards are locked into their current core for the foreseeable future. They signed Bradley Beal to a five-year supermax this offseason which he will earn $251 million during.

In addition to that, he received a full no-trade clause and a 15 percent trade kicker, so if the partnership goes south, he will pick where he wants to go next.

The Wizards have to do everything they can to make things work and should continue trying to raise the ceiling of the roster. Beal and Kristaps Porzingis are an intriguing duo as both have already reached the All-Star plateau but have been nagged by injuries.

Collins would be an excellent third option behind those two. He can play off of them as an above-average No. 3 but has shown that he can produce as a No. 1 for stretches when needed. Combined with Kyle Kuzma and Deni Avdija, the Wizards would have a diverse, intriguing trio of forwards to deploy.

For Atlanta, this deal will save them a lot of money long-term. Even if Rui Hachimura regains the form he showed the first two seasons in the NBA, he will not be signing a contract as large as the one that Collins has.

Will Barton is on an expiring deal himself, freeing up more money for the Hawks to allocate to the players who are eligible for extensions. Barton will provide the team with some secondary playmaking and scoring from the wing, something the Hawks could use a little more of.

Atlanta also picks up a future first-round pick in the deal. Because Washington’s first-round pick that is owned by the New York Knicks is protected through 2026, they are not allowed to trade a pick between now and then. When taking into account the Stepien Rule, 2028 is the earliest the Wizards can trade a pick.
