How This Deal Impacts Indiana Pacers
The Indiana Pacers have made their intentions clear in the last few months. They are rebuilding and looking to compile as many assets as possible to set themselves up for a brighter future. It started at the deadline when they parted ways with Domantas Sabonis, Caris LeVert and Torrey Craig.
It has continued in the offseason, as Malcolm Brogdon was traded to the Boston Celtics. They very well may not be done, as other veterans could be on the move ahead of training camp.
Buddy Hield has been involved in some of those trade talks along with Myles Turner, but if the Pacers can get some value for T.J. McConnell as they did in this deal with the Dallas Mavericks, they likely wouldn’t hesitate to move on from him, too.
Josh Green presents them with another chance at developing a young guard with upside. He is only 21 and has yet to receive consistent rotation minutes with the Mavericks. Players aren’t selected in the first round of the draft without potential and the Pacers would look to get the most out of him along with the other youngsters on the roster.

While Davis Bertans doesn’t fit their timeline, he does have as many seasons remaining on his contract as McConnell, so it is a bit of a wash. The frontcourt doesn’t have as many players vying for playing time as the backcourt, however, so Bertans 3-point stroke could actually be a useful addition to the team.
Any sort of draft capital will be valuable and useful for a rebuilding team as well. Receiving a 2025 first-round pick would give them 5 picks in the next three years. That provides them with some maneuverability when it comes to making trades, whether it is to move up the draft board or bring in an established talent.
