Damian Lillard is a star, but unfortunately, he’s been something close to a lone star throughout much of his tenure with the Portland Trail Blazers. 

Of course, that’s not entirely fair. For much of that time, Lillard shared a backcourt with C.J. McCollum. His shooting ability and overall scoring chops have long made him a fringe star in this league. Still, that “fringe” operative looms. 

Primarily, the pairing didn’t work on the defensive end. Rostering one small guard can be trouble enough on that side of the ball. Pairing two is a recipe for trouble, no matter what their combined offensive prowess may be. 

The Blazers seem to have identified that. McCollum is now a member of the New Orleans Pelicans.

Moreover, they already acquired Jerami Grant this summer, seemingly recognizing that the best co-star for Dame would likely be a wing, forward, or big.
