Why The Memphis Grizzlies Do The Deal
In essence, this is a trade between a team with three stars and a team with one. If it went through, it would level the playing field.
In 2022-23, that is. After all, the Grizzlies already, arguably, have another star in Jaren Jackson Jr. Unfortunately, he’s slated to miss most, if not all, of 2022-23 with an injury. Realistically, this deal is about 2023-24 as much as anything else for Memphis.
With that in mind, the fit between Simmons and Jackson Jr. is tantalizing. Jackson Jr. is exactly the type of stretch big Simmons needs in order to be maximized. Moreover, they could be the most dominant defensive pairing in the NBA.
The fit between Simmons and Grizzlies franchise player Ja Morant is less clear. To be sure, they’re both most effective with the ball in their hands.

Still, if Simmons were willing to function as a pick-and-roll finisher in half-court sets where they share the floor, this could work. He could still operate as a point guard in transition, and when he’s on the floor without Morant.
In all likelihood, that’ll still be a more prominent role than he’ll receive in Brooklyn.
