Why The Brooklyn Nets Do The Deal
Indulge us in a thought experiment. You are the general manager of the Brooklyn Nets. You have Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving on your team. Choose between options A and B.
Option A is one of the best defensive players in the entire NBA. He’s also got elite floor vision. On the other hand, he’s absolutely unwilling to shoot jump shots, which means that he’s got very little off-ball value when either Durant or Irving has the rock.
Furthermore, he’s frequently unable to play for a variety of mental and physical health-related reasons.
Option B is three players. None are capable of the star performances of Option A, but each will provide value in your playoff rotation. You’re getting a heady floor general who manages the offense and rarely makes mistakes, a rugged, physical 3-and-D wing, and a multi-positional, hardworking combo big.

If you chose option B, you understand this trade. The Nets are parting with the best player in the deal, but with two players most would consider better than him on the roster, they could justify opting for the depth.
Can the Grizzlies justify parting with it?
