Moreover, most number one picks are highly talented. On the other hand, talent isn’t always commiserated with trade value in the National Basketball Association. 

After all, trade value is driven by more factors. Availability, locker room presence, age and contract value all tie into how much a player can fetch on the open market. Sometimes, great players can be surprisingly difficult to move. 

Simmons doesn’t exactly grade out well on most of those metrics. He’s regularly unavailable, has a questionable, seemingly aloof presence on the team, and is expensive. At least he isn’t old?  

For that reason, the Nets aren’t getting the type of return they may hope for in this proposal. To be sure, trading a former number one pick for three solid, rotational players and a first-round pick will sting.
