It has been a few weeks since an update has been given on the trade front in regard to Donovan Mitchell. After landing a significant return from the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for Rudy Gobert, the Utah Jazz were open to exploring the trade market for their other NBA All-Star player.

The asking price for Mitchell is reportedly very high, as they are looking to get at least as much for him as they did for Gobert, if not more. The New York Knicks are one team that has been engaged with them from the start.

New York has everything that Utah is looking for in a return package. They can offer a ton of draft capital as they have eight first-round picks they can trade. Young players that the Jazz could be interested in as they enter a rebuild are also prevalent on the roster.

After taking a break from negotiating, the teams are reportedly back at the table. Shams Charania and Tony Jones of The Athletic have provided an update on the trade talks between the two sides, as things are still progressing slowly.

“The Knicks and Jazz had a fresh trade conversation within the past week about potential packages for Mitchell, according to sources. There is no traction between the two teams on a deal, and no Mitchell trade is imminent for the Jazz, sources said.”

A fresh trade conversation sounds like new proposals are being discussed by the teams. Negotiations reached an impasse the last time they talked as Leon Rose and the Knicks balked at the asking price that Danny Ainge and the Jazz had. Unwilling to come down from that price at the time, both teams walked away.

Until there is a breakthrough on compensation, traction will be hard to find. The Knicks know they have the most to offer but aren’t going to send all of their assets to Utah for Donovan Mitchell. The Jazz want to extract as much as possible as the Gobert trade threw the market for a loop.

Trade talks are likely to continue in the coming weeks leading up to training camp. That could be a soft deadline for a deal to get made as the trade talks would be distractions for each franchise gearing up for the regular season.
