Why The Detroit Pistons Do The Deal
Between Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey, the Detroit Pistons have one of the most exciting young backcourts in the NBA. On the other hand, there’s a dirty secret about them – they may not fit well together.
Cade Cunningham had a solid rookie season. He’s obviously got a high feel for the game. He’s an excellent passer who can run an offense and is a versatile defender. With all that being said, he did not shoot the three-pointer effectively in 2021-22.
Ivey failed to do the same at the college level. He’s an athletic marvel who should wreak havoc in transition and get to the basket for layups and dunks, but it could take him a while to connect from distance at the professional level – if he ever gets there at all.
All of which makes Mitchell a cleaner fit alongside Cunningham. He’s a reliable floor-spacer.

Furthermore, Cade Cunningham’s great positional size will offset his defensive limitations as a small guard. Finally, at 25, he’ll still have plenty of time to grow alongside this young Pistons core.
If all goes well, they could grow into a powerhouse before we know it.
