Cleveland Cavaliers Receive: G Donovan Mitchell
Trade value in the NBA is a funny thing. Often, it’s precarious.
For example, take Collin Sexton. In 2020-21, he averaged 24.3 points per game on solid efficiency. That’s a very impressive figure. In fact, if Donovan Mitchell put up the same numbers next season, it wouldn’t even qualify as a disappointment.
Yet, it’s been widely reported that Sexton has a very small market as a restricted free agent. What accounts for the massive gap in their perceived value? It isn’t defense – Mitchell grades out at least as poorly as Sexton on that end of the floor.
There are other explanations. Mitchell is a better playmaker. Furthermore, he’s posted similar production in a winning environment. It’s worth noting that the Cleveland Cavaliers were weak when Sexton was posting those gaudy numbers.
