The Utah Jazz have been engaged in trade discussions involving NBA All-Star Donovan Mitchell for quite some time. After their disappointing first-round exit at the hands of the Dallas Mavericks, it became apparent that fundamental changes were needed.

With the Minnesota Timberwolves offering an absolute haul for Rudy Gobert, it was too favorable of a deal for the Jazz to pass up. He’s not paired up with Karl-Anthony Towns in the frontcourt while the Jazz canvasses the trade market for Donovan Mitchell.

Arguably the top storyline in NBA trade rumors lately has been the potential for Mitchell to land with the New York Knicks. However, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, those trade discussions have “stalled out.” Utah has engaged other teams including the Charlotte Hornets and Washington Wizards.

It had been previously reported by Charania that teams including the Miami Heat, Toronto Raptors, Sacramento Kings, and Atlanta Hawks also have interest in a trade for Donovan Mitchell. Many teams needing perimeter firepower will undoubtedly pursue a deal.

The New York Knicks have been widely considered a favorite to acquire Mitchell since they have significant future draft capital at their disposal. A fair amount of those picks are protected first-rounders that may have diminished value than the traditional draft asset.

Regardless, the Knicks still have the potential for a compelling package but appear to have not yet made their best offer. It just remains to be seen how aggressive either side will be in their negotiations as the 2022-23 season approaches.

The Utah Jazz could decide to return next season with Donovan Mitchell still on the roster as they are positioned to potentially still build around him. On the other end, there is a strong case to be made that a full teardown of the roster makes sense for the right trade offer.

For teams like the Charlotte Hornets and Washington Wizards each have a standout perimeter player that could use more help to take pressure off them. It just remains to be seen how intriguing of a trade offer they can make unless they are willing to mortgage future draft capital strongly.
