Charlotte Hornets Receive: G Russell Westbrook, 2027 First-Round Pick (LAL), 2029 First-Round Pick (LAL)
Brooklyn Nets Receive: F Gordon Hayward, F/C P.J. Washington, F Kelly Oubre Jr.
Los Angeles Lakers Receive: G Kyrie Irving
For many teams in the Nets’ situation, there would be an obvious path forward: trade your stars for as many draft picks as possible, bottom out, and rebuild.
Unfortunately, that path is effectively blocked for the Nets.
After all, they owe either a first-round pick or swap rights to the Houston Rockets from now through to 2027. Building through the draft would be highly complicated for this club. They’d be better served to stay competitive instead.
This deal ought to help them do so. Gordon Hayward may not be the star he was prior to a gruesome 2017 leg injury, but he’s still a productive, playmaking wing. Meanwhile, P.J. Washington is a fantastic combo big who defends with gusto and spaces the floor.

Losing them will hurt the Hornets in 2022-23. With that said, they’re already losing Miles Bridges – retooling may be a smart call. If they feel the same, doing so with two additional future first-round picks at their disposal will be easier.
