San Antonio Spurs Receive: G Russell Westbrook, 2029 First-Round Pick (LAL)
Brooklyn Nets Receive: F Doug McDermott, G/F Josh Richardson, 2027 First-Round Pick (LAL)
Los Angeles Lakers Receive: G Kyrie Irving
This deal differs slightly from the others. That’s because the Spurs have less to offer the Nets on a win-now basis.
Of course, we could have included Jakob Poeltl here. He’s a high-end defensive big. On the other hand, as a non-shooter, he’s a poor fit alongside Simmons. If the Nets aim to stay competitive, they should avoid pairing them.
With that said, McDermott and Richardson will still be helpful. The former is one of the league’s best shooters, while the latter is a serviceable 3-and-D player. Still, this is the worst win-now package the Nets receive in this piece.
That’s precisely why they’re getting a first-round pick as well. Meanwhile, the Spurs shouldn’t hesitate to trade McDermott and Richardson for a first-rounder. After all, neither is fetching one on their own.
