The Los Angeles Lakers have officially dismissed head coach Darvin Ham following a disappointing first-round exit in this year’s NBA playoffs. This decision concludes Ham’s two-year stint with the franchise, during which the team posted a regular-season record of 90-74 and a postseason record of 9-12.

According to The Athletic’s NBA insiders, the strategic shift comes after Lakers’ vice president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka and other front office executives undertook a comprehensive review of the season, including player exit interviews.

The assessment evidently led to the consensus that a new direction was necessary to maximize the potential of the team, particularly in the twilight years of LeBron James’s illustrious career.

In the search for Ham’s successor, the Lakers are considering several prominent figures in the coaching landscape. Early candidates include Mike Budenholzer, former head coach of the Atlanta Hawks and Milwaukee Bucks; Kenny Atkinson, currently an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors; and JJ Redick, an ESPN broadcaster and former NBA player.

Budenholzer, known for his defensive acumen and having secured a championship with the Bucks in 2021, is noted for his extensive experience and success in the league.

Atkinson, who has a strong track record in player development, previously led a rejuvenated Brooklyn Nets as head coach.

While new to coaching, Redick is regarded for his analytical approach and understanding of modern NBA strategies, attributes that could translate well into a head coaching role.

Moreover, if Tyronn Lue, the current head coach of the LA Clippers, becomes available, he would also be considered a strong candidate due to his previous successful tenure with James in Cleveland, where they won the NBA championship in 2016.

As the Lakers prepare for a pivotal offseason, the organization is set to conduct a broad and extensive search to identify a coach who can lead the team back to its former glory and contend at the highest levels.

The selection process will undoubtedly be a focal point of the NBA offseason, reflecting the Lakers’ commitment to excellence and their urgency to capitalize on the closing window of championship opportunity with their current core roster.
