Why The Charlotte Hornets Do The Deal

The Charlotte Hornets are paying no small price here. Kelly Oubre Jr. is expendable, but PJ Washington and two first-round picks are a substantial package. 

Jarrett Allen is worth it. The 24-year-old big man is coming off of his first All-Star appearance. 

In 2021-22, he established himself as one of the best rim protectors in the NBA. Allen can also survive in space if situations call for it. All told, he’s emerged as one of the league’s better defensive big men. 

Meanwhile, he’s a solid contributor on offense as well. Allen’s game isn’t flashy, but it is substantive. He’s primarily a pick-and-roll finisher, but that’s exactly what the Hornets need alongside Ball.
