How This Trade Impacts Dallas Mavericks
The Dallas Mavericks are going to have to get creative when figuring out a way to replace Jalen Brunson. Capped out, free agency isn’t a feasible option. They are going to have to find a trade partner if they want to go outside of the organization for help and the Cleveland Cavaliers could provide it.
Collin Sexton would be a solid replacement for Brunson as a combo guard with a score-first mentality to play off of Luka Doncic. They do their best work in different ways, but it still results in an efficient offensive attack being displayed.
During the 2020-21 season, when he was healthy, Sexton averaged 23.4 points per game. While his opportunities won’t be as plentiful with the Mavericks, that at least shows he can carry the offensive load for periods of time, taking pressure off of Doncic.
With Tim Hardaway Jr. coming back from injury and Spencer Dinwiddie already in the fold, the Mavericks would hope that Sexton’s addition would be enough firepower to replace Brunson. To land him, they are dealing from a position of strength.

With the arrival of Christian Wood and JaVale McGee, someone in the frontcourt is going to lose minutes. Dwight Powell or Maxi Kleber will be impacted and used to match salary. Dorian Finney-Smith could end up playing more time at small forward, which could make Reggie Bullock expendable.
A first-round pick is attached to sweeten the deal as Cleveland reportedly hasn’t had their attention caught by any offers presented to them by Dallas.
