The Dallas Mavericks entered the NBA offseason as the runner-up in the Western Conference, losing to the eventual champion Golden State Warriors. They entered the offseason with some holes on the roster that they wanted to address, and they accomplished that goal.

Dallas wanted to upgrade the middle and they did that. Christian Wood was acquired from the Houston Rockets in exchange for Boban Marjanovic, Sterling Brown, Trey Burke, Marquese Chriss and the No. 26 overall pick. They also signed JaVale McGee in free agency using a portion of their mid-level exception.

However, a gaping hole was created during free agency. Point guard Jalen Brunson was an unrestricted free agent and many presumed he would be returning to the Mavericks. However, he ultimately ended up signing with the New York Knicks to become their starting point guard.

There could be an investigation into how Brunson ended up with the Knicks, as there is a strong possibility they are hit with tampering charges.

However, the most that will happen to them is that they will be hit with a fine and loss of a second-round pick. It isn’t going to change the fact that the Mavericks lost their second-best player from their postseason run.

Replacing Brunson will not be easy, as he was an integral part of their rotation. They will have to get creative and one potential avenue to go down is acquiring Collin Sexton from the Cleveland Cavaliers.

What could it take to land Sexton? Let’s take a look at this hypothetical trade that lands the former lottery pick with the Mavericks.
