Lakers’ Stance On Trading Horton-Tucker For Jazz Vets

Los Angeles Lakers, Utah Jazz, NBA Trade Rumors

While the NBA has hit a bit of a lull in their calendar with Summer League winding down in Las Vegas, there is plenty of things to look forward to in the coming weeks leading up to training camp. A lot of that attention will be put on the Utah Jazz.

The Jazz are fresh off another early exit from the postseason. This time it was at the hands of the Dallas Mavericks, who won the series in six games despite not having Luka Doncic for the first three.

A shake-up is something many have thought could occur in Utah the last few years, and this offseason, it finally occurred. Danny Ainge joined the front office and began cleaning house, as Utah is entering a rebuilding stage. Royce O’Neale was the first player traded, followed by Rudy Gobert.

Next up on the docket could be Donovan Mitchell, who the New York Knicks and Miami Heat are both aiming to acquire. All of the veterans on the roster have been made available as well. One of the players that have already drawn interest is Patrick Beverley.

Beverley was acquired from the Minnesota Timberwolves as part of the Gobert package, but it doesn’t look like he will remain in Salt Lake City very long. However, don’t expect a trade to the Los Angeles Lakers to occur.

The Lakers were one of the teams mentioned as a potential landing spot for Beverley, but according to Marc Stein on his Substack, a deal isn’t likely to occur between the two teams.

“As such, according to one source familiar with the team’s thinking, there is no push forthcoming from the Lakers’ side to swap Talen Horton-Tucker (as rumored) for Patrick Beverley, who ranks as one of Utah’s very available veterans alongside Mike Conley, Bojan Bogdanović and Jordan Clarkson”

Los Angeles is still holding out hope that they can pry Kyrie Irving from the Brooklyn Nets. Until they are 100 percent sure that is no longer an avenue they can go down, any other negotiations will be put on hold.

While Patrick Beverley’s defensive intensity, 3-point shooting, and playmaking would certainly help, Russell Westbrook is still entrenched as the starting point guard. Unless that changes, swapping Talen Horton-Tucker, their only real asset player-wise, for a backup point guard would not make much sense.

If Talen Horton-Tucker is going to be moved, the Los Angeles Lakers will likely use him as a piece in a bigger deal. Buddy Hield, Myles Turner, and Eric Gordon are three other players that have been linked to Los Angeles that Horton-Tucker could be used in a package to land.
