Miami Heat Could Sign This Intriguing Guard In Free Agency

The Miami Heat likely aren’t done with their NBA offseason quite yet. They’ve been consistently linked to some of the possible major trades that are still pending. Kevin Durant dubbed them along with the Phoenix Suns as his top-two preferred trade destinations after submitting a formal trade request.

They’ve also been linked to Donovan Mitchell who the Utah Jazz have recently announced is available in trade talks. After coming within one game of two Finals appearances in three seasons, the Heat have made it clear that they’re going to be aggressive to try to win a title during this era of the team.

While landing either Kevin Durant or Donovan Mitchell to pair with Jimmy Butler would make Miami an instant favorite in the Eastern Conference, it’ll be difficult for them to pull off a deal for either, as they’re extremely short on future assets.

But if they cannot significantly upgrade the team via trade, they may still be able to make some headway in free agency as there are a few viable talents still on the market. Bleacher Report suggested that they chase after two-way ball handler Dennis Schroder this offseason.

Miami could use another veteran ball-handler as insurance for Lowry and to help keep him fresh for the playoffs. Schroder averaged 13.5 points, 3.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists between the Boston Celtics and Rockets and is just two years removed from finishing second in Sixth Man of the Year voting while with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Schroder’s point-of-attack defense would fit perfectly in Miami and their infamously vaunted Heat culture. His ability to create for himself and others would also assuage their struggles to score in the half-court in the postseason.

The Heat’s biggest need is adding another shot creator alongside Jimmy Butler, someone who can take some of the offensive load off of his shoulders in the playoffs. While Kevin Durant or Donovan Mitchell would be the ideal candidates to do so, Dennis Schroder certainly isn’t a terrible plan B.
