After falling one game short of reaching the 2022 NBA Finals, Pat Riley wanted to see his players come back hungrier next season to get over that hump. The Miami Heat are infamous for the high standards that they hold their players to with fitness tests heading into the season and Riley wants to see his players return with some motivation for the 2022-23 season.

While the organization has goals for each player, they will all have some personal ones for themselves as well. Tyler Herro, the reigning Sixth Man of the Year award winner, has some major goals for the upcoming season.

Herro is in Las Vegas for the NBA 2K House of Greatness launch and Summer League. While making an appearance on the red carpet of the NBA 2K event, Herro shared some of his personal goals.

“Trying to be a starter in this league and then be an All-Star one day. So that’s the next step.”

Every player wants to start games, but it is who ends them that is the most important. There is a chance that Herro is part of both lineups during the upcoming season, and Riley has already laid out the plan for him to achieve that goal. If Herro wants to start, Riley wants to see him go earn that spot.

“As far as being a starter, we will see in October. Come to training camp and win it. It’s something you earn. Sometimes it’s that easy.”

With P.J. Tucker moving on in free agency, there is a starting spot up for grabs. Jimmy Butler, Kyle Lowry and Bam Adebayo are likely the only players locked into starting roles, so it is certainly an attainable goal for Herro.

While it wasn’t something that he discussed, the most intriguing thing hanging over Herro this offseason is a potential rookie extension. The two sides have until opening night to get a deal done, but Miami could take their time.

Should the sides agree to a deal, Herro will not be allowed to be traded until next year. As a rumored suitor for multiple All-Stars in trades this offseason, the Heat could opt to not sign Herro to an extension this summer, leaving their trade options open in case a deal materializes.

In any deal for an All-Star level player, Herro will be involved. If that is something the Heat want to continue pursuing, they will not sign him to an extension before the deadline, keeping one of their best trade chips available to build a package around.
