Why The San Antonio Spurs Do The Deal

We already lauded the San Antonio Spurs for having a clear vision. This trade finds them pursuing it even more aggressively.

The Spurs don’t make this deal to acquire Westbrook. They make it to flip two veterans for a pick swap. With that said, they would have options as it pertains to Westbrook.

Realistically, the Spurs could unleash Westbrook and allow him to rack up his triple-doubles up to the trade deadline. It’s possible that they could extract further value in a trade with a point guard needy contender that way. They probably wouldn’t compromise their draft odds for next summer that way either.

After all, we’ve seen by now that big stat lines from Westbrook don’t always translate into wins. With that said, if the San Antonio Spurs were a little concerned that he’d be able to will them to too many victories, they could sit him for the year or buy him out.
