Trade Russell Westbrook (With First-Round Picks Attached)
Captain Obvious reporting for duty here.
Sorry for the tired trope, but the notion that the Lakers should trade Russell Westbrook is not controversial. In fact, it’s beginning to approach consensus.
That doesn’t make it any less true. Some have seen the writing on the wall here since before it was erected. Even in his prime, Westbrook was a poor floor-spacer. Meanwhile, the formula for successfully building around LeBron James has always been well-documented. He can play with anyone, as long as they can shoot.
In 2021-22, Westbrook shot 29.8% from long range. That’s just a hair worse than his career 30.5% mark. On NBA standards, the man can’t shoot. For that reason, he can’t successfully play with LeBron James.

You don’t need to be a basketball genius to figure this one out. If the Lakers are serious about improving ahead of 2022-23, they need to get off Westbrook. If they have to attach as much draft capital as the rules allow in order to do so, so be it.
