Why The Los Angeles Lakers Do The Deal
This would not be an easy decision for the Los Angeles Lakers. There would be valid reasons for them to decline this trade.
For starters, it doesn’t solve their Westbrook problem. If anything, it compounds it. The former MVP struggled mightily to play alongside James last season. Realistically, there is no reason to be optimistic that he’ll ever be able to do so.
Bringing in a player who plays his position makes the situation even more awkward. With that said, at least the Lakers know Irving can play with James.
This deal will make more sense if the Lakers are able to part with Westbrook. If they can bring in a starting-caliber big man in the process, that would be a tremendous bonus. In that event, the addition of Irving should make them a more offensively potent team in 2022-23, assuming he’s regularly on the floor.
