Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal
Yes, this is a tremendous risk for the Dallas Mavericks. With that said, can they afford to be cautious?
Sure, they just made the Western Conference Finals. They also just lost Jalen Brunson. Christian Wood has the potential to have been a solid addition this summer, but he’s unlikely to offset the loss of a secondary ball-handler.
The Mavericks may be due for regression in 2022-23. One could make the case that they need not worry. Luka Doncic is 23. They should have time to work their way back to contention.
Having said that, life moves fast in the National Basketball Association. Just ask the Brooklyn Nets. If the Mavericks don’t find themselves in the Finals soon, who knows if Doncic will remain satisfied with the organization.

If Irving works out, he could get them there. He and Doncic would form, almost inarguably, the most talented backcourt in the NBA. All they’d need would be for him to suit up on a regular basis, and he’s skilled enough to raise this team’s ceiling to the sky. Are the Nets getting enough back for such a player?
