Why The New York Knicks Do The Deal
An unhappy player is a distressed asset. Talent alone does not determine trade value: plenty of contextual factors determine how deals get done in the NBA.
Having said that, sometimes, a distressed asset can be swapped for another one. That would be the case with this deal. After all, Julius Randle looked plenty distressed throughout 2021-22.
Often, he appeared to be at odds with his teammates and coaching staff. Furthermore, his play declined rapidly from the levels it reached during his All-NBA campaign in 2020-21. Randle’s time in New York, like Irving’s in Brooklyn, may be coming to an end.
Furthermore, the Knicks need a point guard. Granted, they’re probably looking for one who plays basketball on a regular basis. Still, taking a risk on Irving may be more palpable than continuing to take a risk on Randle.
