Why The Utah Jazz Make The Deal
Some say that the definition of insanity is trying the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results. If that’s true, keeping Rudy Gobert past this summer would be crazy.
The Utah Jazz make this trade simply to try a different look. They’ll be hoping that the sum is a little greater than the parts of their team in 2022-23. That’s not to say that they won’t have strong parts.
OG Anunoby is, at a minimum, one of the better 3-and-D wings in the NBA. If he really does have hidden playmaking ability, he’ll be a major acquisition for the Jazz. A breakout season in Salt Lake City could do wonders for the team’s win total.
Meanwhile, Gary Trent Jr. provides a similar 3-and-D archetype. He feels like a less likely candidate to surpass those parameters, but the Jazz won’t need him to. If he simply plays his role, they’ll be happy to welcome him into the fold.

If they’re lucky, adding these two players could be the reason they’re able to keep Donovan Mitchell long-term.
