Why The Toronto Raptors Make The Deal

There are two worlds in which the Toronto Raptors could make this deal.

The first one is a world in which the Anunoby rumors are true. In that world, the Raptors would be happy to part with a player who was unhappy to be with them. Gary Trent Jr. and a player who’s likely to angle for his own departure anyway is a great deal for Rudy Gobert.

The second one is a world in which the Raptors simply feel this is how valuable Gobert could be for them. It’s entirely possible.

Anunoby and Trent Jr. are both excellent players, but neither has any one skill as strong as Gobert’s rim protection. If the Raptors can find budget versions of each while adding Gobert, they could be better in 2022-23.
