Why The Brooklyn Nets Do The Deal
Say what you will about Russell Westbrook. Obviously, we have our share of criticisms as well. If he’s healthy enough to play basketball, the man is playing basketball.
The same can’t be said for Kyrie Irving. WIth this deal, the Nets are choosing reliability over Irving’s on-court impact when he does suit up to play.
Furthermore, it’s worth noting Westbrook’s long-time experience playing with Kevin Durant. The two enjoyed tremendous success together early in their careers with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Durant is also a much better fit for Westbrook than James.
Arguably, Durant is the easiest superstar to fit with in the entire league. His off-ball gravity is among the league’s best. The threat of his jumper would open up the floor for Westbrook. This deal doesn’t make the Nets perfect. They’ll still have to address Westbrook’s poor fit on paper with Ben Simmons.

With that said, it gives them options. With some coaching creativity, they could make the two work. Furthermore, with some general management creativity, they could find a separate trade for Simmons. In that event, reuniting Westbrook and Durant could make them a better team than they’d be with a frequently absent Irving.
