The ages of the players in this Toronto Raptors core are mixed. Accordingly, it’s hard to know whether they’re rebuilding or ready to contend.
Pascal Siakam and Fred VanVleet are both on the wrong side of 25. They’re the Raptors’ two best players. On the other hand, Scottie Barnes, Gary Trent Jr., and Anunoby aren’t far off that mark, and they’re all well under the quarter-century mark. In other words, the Raptors are at a fork in the road.
This deal doesn’t help them chart a course, but it does split the difference. In terms of 2022-23, Harris ought to be useful. He’s not nearly the defensive player Anunoby is, but he’s a slightly more reliable floor-spacer. On the other hand, the Raptors get two first-round picks as compensation for dealing away the best player in the trade.
The value of those picks is to be determined. The 2023 selection is unlikely to convey in the lottery, with the 76ers gearing up for a title run next season. On the other hand, who knows where Philly might be by 2027.
