Charlotte Hornets fans won’t be universally excited about this deal. That doesn’t mean it isn’t best for their organization.
The Hornets need to clear cap space, and they need to do it soon. They’re likely to retain Miles Bridges in Restricted Free Agency this summer. He won’t come cheap. Meanwhile, LaMelo Ball’s rookie extension is also pending.
Here, they pick up an expiring contract and get off of long-term deals owed to Hayward and Rozier. They’re parting with Kai Jones and a first-round pick in order to do so. It’s not the type of deal fans fantasize about, but it could benefit them in the long run.
Meanwhile, the Wizards get Jones, two first-round picks and a swap in exchange for Beal. If Jones reaches his ceiling, this could look like a coup for the Wizards down the line. Meanwhile, if he doesn’t, it could look like a huge mistake.
