Dallas Mavericks Receive: F Julius Randle
New York Knicks Receive: G Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
The Dallas Mavericks are likely to shop for a co-star that fits alongside Luka Doncic this summer. Does Julius Randle fit that description?
It all depends on which version of Randle they’re getting. If he brings his woeful shooting from 2021-22 to Dallas, they’ll regret this move. On the other hand, if he can regain his 2020-21 form (or even split the difference), the Mavs could be a real threat to win the NBA championship in 2022-23.
Meanwhile, their inclusion in this deal should suit both the New York Knicks and the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Knicks are parting with two fewer draft picks at the expense of Randle. As talented as he is, clearing his cap commitment could aid them in landing a co-star for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander down the line.
Finally, the Thunder take on less veteran money by including the Mavericks. Dwight Powell’s expiring contract is actually an asset for them, and Dinwiddie’s pact is far less burdensome than Fournier’s.
