If you’re a traditionalist, you probably can’t fathom the idea that the Oklahoma City Thunder would trade Shai Gilgeous-Alexander this NBA offseason.

After all, the Thunder are one of the youngest, and worst teams in the National Basketball Association. Gilgeous-Alexander is 23 and already a star-level contributor. He should be untouchable, right?

Not so fast. The Thunder’s team-building philosophy is basically one big (expletive) to tradition. General Manager Sam Presti seems committed to stockpiling draft capital until the Thunder are selecting from 1 through to 30 in the 2042 NBA Draft.

Jokes aside, the Thunder may favor draft picks over established players until they land a clear-cut, undeniable, top-five leaguewide talent. Gilgeous-Alexander, for all of his superstar potential, may fall just short of that mark. Plus, his ability to play basketball threatens to cut the tank short.

If Presti isn’t ready to bring his experiment to an end, he may feel pressure to move Gilgeous-Alexander before the Oklahoma City Thunder (gasp) start winning games.

If that’s his thought process, here are three deals that send Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to the New York Knicks.
