Utah Jazz Receive: F/C Kevin Love, G/F Isaac Okoro, 2025 First-Round Pick (CLE), 2026 First-Round Pick (Swap – CLE), 2027 First Round Pick (CLE), 2028 First-Round Pick (Swap – CLE)
Cleveland Cavaliers Receive: G Donovan Mitchell
Since the Cleveland Cavaliers have their 2023 pick already outbound, assembling a package built around draft capital is a touch complicated. The Stepien rule dictates that they’ve got to have a first-round pick in at least one of two consecutive years.
The Utah Jazz could look at this in one of two ways. They might decide that they’d prefer a package that offered more immediate relief. That’s fair. On the other hand, four distant first-round picks and/or pick swaps come with their own advantages.
This deal buys the Jazz time. They own a pick in the 2023 Draft. That class is highly anticipated. They could land their franchise player after presumably dealing their other veterans and bottoming out. By the time they’re ready to compete again, these picks will start conveying.
It’s a future-focused plan for a franchise that generally prefers to stay the course. Still, it could pay tremendous dividends.
