On the surface, this is about as logical a trade as the Utah Jazz could make for Donovan Mitchell.

They’re landing his immediate successor in Collin Sexton. As he hits Restricted Free Agency this summer, he’s heading to Salt Lake City by way of sign-and-trade. He’s two years younger than Mitchell, and only a season removed from averaging 24.3 points per game in 2020-21.

He’s also just not quite as good. That’s why the Jazz receive another quality young player in Markannen and a first-round pick in addition. Between the three assets, they’re getting a quality return for Mitchell with this deal.

That doesn’t mean it’s the return that they want. If the Jazz are preparing themselves for a long rebuilding process, they may want more draft capital in exchange for Mitchell.
