Why The Trade Benefits The Brooklyn Nets
At this point, any player that can put the ball in the basket would be an improvement over Ben Simmons. That is not saying the Brooklyn Nets need more offensive prowess, but it couldn’t hurt to add a strong guard next to Kyrie Irving.
D’Angelo Russell scored 18.1 points per game last season for Minnesota. Over the course of his career, Russell is averaging 17.7 points per game. During his time with the Timberwolves, he has played multiple positions in the back-court, which would help in Brooklyn.
The Nets have Irving, who is one of the best point guards in the league. His presence means that Russell would not have to run the show from the top, but could continue to play off the ball. That is also the role that he filled during his time in Golden State.
The ultimate benefit would be getting Simmons off the books. There were many that believed the addition of Simmons was one that would benefit the Nets, but it is getting to the point where it just seems like another distraction to a team that already had plenty before.
