Why The Trade Benefits The Minnesota Timberwolves
On one hand, the Minnesota Timberwolves would be getting D’Angelo Russell off the books in the final year of his contract. On the other, they would take on the task of Simmons.
It is clear that the team that acquires Simmons would need a plan. There are certain players that can be thrown into any scheme around the league. Simmons is not one of those players.
Simmons has completely fallen off offensively. On a team like Minnesota, Simmons could find a home playing the four and have plenty of protection. Karl-Anthony Towns is one of the best big men in the league, which means Simmons would not have to do much offensively. Edwards has emerged as a star in the league and is only going to improve.
This move would give the Timberwolves a new big three to rely on moving forward. The question remains, would this trade shake things up in a negative way in Minnesota?
Towns and Russell are close friends and it seems like one of the reasons he was brought to town in the first place. After a season where it all seemed to go right for the Timberwolves, they could be in a position to continue to improve. We saw the Memphis Grizzlies do just that this season.

The Minnesota Timberwolves need to have a plan moving forward with some expiring contracts coming up. It will be interesting to see how the front office prioritizes offseason moves.
