Miami Heat Receive: F Robert Covington, F Marcus Morris Sr.
Los Angeles Clippers Receive: G Kyle Lowry, F P.J. Tucker
Whether or not this LA Clippers trade appeals to the Miami Heat will depend on to what extent they think Robert Covington is an upgrade over P.J. Tucker.
After all, they’re similar players. They’re both modern-day power forwards who hang their hats on aggressive, versatile defense and floor-spacing. It is worth noting that Covington is about 3 inches taller and six years younger.
Is that enough for the Miami Heat to pull the trigger here? The notion of a defense anchored by Covington and Bam Adebayo is frightening. The Heat may not be able to resist the urge to put that grouping together.
As for the Clippers, they shouldn’t hesitate here. They need to be in the market for a point guard. Even if Lowry’s decline is permanent, the Clippers don’t need him to be a star. He’ll continue to be a floor-spacer and smart decision-maker. That’s perfect for a team featuring Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. Lowry will split point guard duties with Reggie Jackson even in a worst-case scenario.
