Bad Landing Spot: Portland Trail Blazers
The Portland Trail Blazers had a strange 2021-22 season. They entered the year with every intention of competing, but when Damian Lillard got hurt, they pivoted into a tank job.
For the time being, it appears that the gambit paid off. The Trail Blazers were awarded with the 7th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. Most expect them to use that pick to land some impact veterans.
A potential target could be Malcolm Brogdon. We don’t love the arrangement. Anfernee Simons just enjoyed a breakout season: the Trail Blazers will retain him at all costs. Furthermore, any success this team has will live and die with Damian Lillard.
That’s enough cooks in the starting-caliber guard kitchen. The Trail Blazers need help on the wings and in the interior. As a combo guard, Brogdon could make for a great sixth man, but it feels like that won’t be nearly enough to get the Blazers over the edge.

If they’re going to be competitive next season, they can’t afford a luxury like Brogdon leading the second unit. They have pressing needs to look after.
