Depending on who you speak to, the Houston Rockets either desperately need a point guard or would avoid adding one like the plague.

Current starter Kevin Porter Jr. is that divisive. Arguably, point guard is not his natural position. The Rockets have spent two years trying to convert him into one. The results have been mixed. The flashes have been there, but the consistency has not.

Perhaps he’s owed one more year. Acquiring Coby White still makes sense for this Rockets team. Adding him to the mix gives the Rockets flexibility at the position.

Furthermore, given his advantageous positional size (along with Porter Jr.’s), the Rockets could easily run three-guard lineups featuring the two with Jalen Green.

As a rebuilding team, the Rockets can’t afford to worry about fit. Porter Jr. has not demonstrated enough certainty in his role to merit passing on a 22-year-old point guard with arguably equal potential. If the Bulls put White on the market, the Rockets should pounce.

In adding him, they increase their odds of having a point guard of the future: one way or the other.
