Making the Case: Detroit Pistons

Jerami Grant came to Detroit on a three-year, $63 million deal. This was not a move to play for a winner but to reinvent his game and make some money. He has accomplished both, but the Pistons’ top priority is to build around Cade Cunningham long-term.

As for the Pistons, they would get another intriguing young player along with a draft pick. Langford never got comfortable in Boston because of injuries and the fact that the backcourt was loaded. He played four games for the Spurs this season and could be looking for a bigger role. This is what the 22-year-old could find in Detroit.

Again, with the pieces the Pistons have in place, they are clearly looking toward the future. Adding the No. 20 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft would be an example of prioritizing such a franchise direction.

The large role Grant played in his first season with the Pistons is no longer needed given the addition of Cunningham as well as Saddiq Bey being a long-term piece. Adding complementary talents like Doug McDermott and Josh Richardson would only help Cunningham’s development.

The need to pay Grant a large contract extension after trading for him should reduce his potential trade value for suitors. The Spurs would not be parting with a premier draft asset as a result. The combination of two solid veterans, a buy-low young player, and the No. 20 overall pick is worth entertaining.
