Charlotte Hornets Receive: G Derrick Rose, G/F Evan Fournier, 2023 First-Round Pick (DAL)
New York Knicks Receive: F Gordon Hayward
This straightforward trade improves the New York Knicks’ roster and the Charlotte Hornets’ books. To that extent, both teams should be getting what they want here.
Granted, the Hornets may be looking for a more outright salary dump for Hayward. They’d probably prefer an expiring contract to either of Rose or Fournier’s pacts. That’s why they’re getting a first-round pick for their troubles here.
At the same time, the Hornets could use a backup point guard. At this stage of his career, that should be a perfect role for Rose. On the other hand, they probably don’t have room in a crowded backcourt for Fournier. They’d look to move him in a separate transaction.
Most significantly, they’re breaking Hayward’s large contract into two more manageable ones. Both Fournier and Rose should be easier to trade to needy contenders at this year’s deadline.

On the other hand, if the Hornets insist on receiving an expiring contract for Hayward, these teams may have to find a third party to make a deal.
