Why The Utah Jazz Would Do This Trade
If the Utah Jazz do make major changes this offseason, there are at least a couple of avenues to explore. They could blow the whole core up, or, they could retool around franchise player Donovan Mitchell. This trade covers them either way.
If they’re tearing this team down to the studs, James Wiseman is a solid investment. Granted, he’s been largely disappointing since being selected second overall in the 2020 NBA Draft. He still has potential as a long, athletic big man with a semblance of a jump shot.
On the other hand, Andrew Wiggins could be a perfect counterpart to Donovan Mitchell. This season, he’s established himself as a 3-and-D wing who also provides secondary shot creation when called upon to. With a suitable Gobert replacement (Wiseman?), they could remain competitive after executing this deal.
Some may accuse them of burning the candle at both ends with that strategy. Arguably, they should either lean harder into rebuilding or acquire a third star to pair with Mitchell and Gobert. There’s merit in that position, but the Utah Jazz are more known for retooling than rebuilding.

This deal allows them some flexibility to see how their season goes before parting with Mitchell. On the other hand, it puts the Golden State Warriors all-in.
